For Immediate Release A Conversation with Senator Brubaker Forms for student financial aid available The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and is now available at my district office at 1248 W. Main Street in Ephrata for both new and returning students. This form, which can also be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov , is used to determine eligibility for many grants, loans, and other financial aid at the federal and state levels. Millions of students each year fail to complete the FAFSA because they think they will not qualify for aid, but students at four-year, junior and community colleges, as well as business, trade, technical and nursing schools, are eligible. Many factors, including family income, a student's year in school, enrollment status and tuition costs, are also considered. The U.S. Education Department will process applications for the 2007-2008 academic year until June 30, 2008, but state aid deadlines are May 1, 2007, for Pennsylvania residents in a four-year degree program or two-year transfer program, and August 1, 2007, for residents in two-year non-transferable programs. Students should also contact their school's financial aid office to verify deadlines, since some require that a FAFSA be filed as early as late January or February to qualify for school-sponsored scholarships and other aid. LIHEAP applications being processed now The state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is available to help low-income families pay their heating bills, and the application period is open now. Cash grants provided through LIHEAP can help low-income families pay for several home-heating sources, with the grant amount based on income, household type, type of fuel used, and the area of the state in which a family lives. Crisis grants are designed to help resolve emergency situations, and households can receive up to $300 per year through crisis grants. Income limits are $14,700 for a single-person household, plus $5,100 for each additional person. More information is available through the Lancaster County Assistance Office, 832 Manor Street, Lancaster, 717-299-7411, or by calling the county's LIHEAP number at 717-299-7543. Help is also available by calling the LIHEAP hotline at 1-866-857-7095, and online application is available at www.compass.state.pa.us. Applications will be processed through March 22, 2007, or until funds are depleted, whichever occurs first. Martin Luther King Jr. Day events held Martin Luther King Jr. was an outstanding individual who offered a message of justice, equality and hope to millions, and his philosophy continues to inspire us today. I believe it is important to take the time to reflect on the work of leaders such as King who shape our history. I also believe it is important to recognize national holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and to engage in activities that help us continue to learn and grow. It was my privilege to participate in several activities around the county celebrating King's life, dreams and legacy. Two Manheim Central students accepted the invitation I extended to our local high schools to join me at the Crispus Attucks Center on Monday for the Center's youth event. While there, we heard a number of wonderful speakers who encouraged hundreds of youth to strive to excel in lifelong learning. Through all of the events I attended, I developed a deeper respect for King, his work, and the country on which he had such a profound impact.
