A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

PennDOT provides hotline for reporting road problems

For the past decade, Pennsylvanians have been able to assist PennDOT with identifying potholes and other road maintenance problems by calling a toll-free maintenance hotline number.

With the recent snow and ice, along with temperature fluctuations that cause the ground to freeze and thaw, conditions are ripe for potholes, drainage issues and other roadway damage. Anyone who sees these problems is encouraged to report them by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD (1-800-349-7623); this information will then be forwarded to the local county maintenance office.

Callers should be as specific as possible when providing locations of problems, including the county and municipality, the state route number (found on the small black-and-white signs along state roads), and familiar landmarks nearby. Road hazards of all types, such as missing highway signs, high shoulder drop-offs and roadway washouts, can also be reported throughout the year.

PennDOT reminds individuals that 1-800-FIX-ROAD is not suitable for reporting traffic accidents, disabled vehicles or other emergences; these incidents should be called into state or local police, or 911.

Ag Committee holds first listening session

As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, I am holding a series of listening sessions called Building a Vision for Rural Pennsylvania across the state to gather input about the issues that affect our agriculture industry and rural communities.

Although the first session originally scheduled for Ephrata had to be canceled due to inclement weather, our series kicked off on February 21 with a session in Philadelphia. While we may not think of cities in conjunction with agriculture, I believe it is important to encourage dialogue between rural and urban areas. In addition, rural and farming areas are not the only ones impacted by the decisions my committee makes.

To illustrate this point, we heard from several local food groups about increasing the availability of and access to affordable, nutritious food. They emphasized that locally grown produce has a strong connection with individuals, restaurants, markets and ultimately, healthier communities.

The listening session at Four Seasons Produce in Ephrata has been rescheduled for March 16.

Welsh Mountain sets 2007 immunization schedule

Welsh Mountain Medical & Dental Center provides free or low-cost immunizations for children who are uninsured or whose insurance does not cover childhood immunizations at several sites throughout Lancaster County.

The immunizations are given at the Welsh Mountain Medical & Dental Center, 584 Springville Road, New Holland, the fourth Thursday of each month; Meadow Creek Family Practice, 435 S. Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, the second Thursday of each month; Ephrata Church of the Brethren, 201 Crescent Avenue, Ephrata, the fourth Tuesday of each month; and St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main Street, Terre Hill, the first Thursday of each month. Each clinic runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

A parent or legal guardian must accompany the child, only up to age 18, and must bring a record of any previous immunization. For any changes to the immunization clinic schedule, cost of immunizations, or other information, you can go to www.welshmountain.com or call 354-4711.
