A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Senate Agriculture Committee works to build agenda

The Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, which I chair, has compiled and summarized the information gathered during this spring's listening sessions.

I was very pleased by the turnout at our eight sessions throughout the Commonwealth, as the individuals who attended presented a broad cross-section of perspectives. The breadth of the testimony highlighted the reality that agriculture truly does impact everyone in some way.

I distributed the summaries to Committee members at the end of June, and have asked them all to review the information we collected and provide their priorities from the summary document by August 1.

The summaries can be accessed at the Committee's web site at www.senatorbrubaker.com/agriculture. Our Committee members are committed to taking these comments and turning them into positive action, and I am looking forward to working together to build a vision for agriculture for the rest of this two-year term and beyond.

Pennsylvania scores high in education

Pennsylvania earned high rankings in two national education reports recently, underscoring the Commonwealth's commitment to our young people.

Results from a U.S. Department of Education report comparing state proficiency levels ranked Pennsylvania eighth-graders seventh in the country in reading and 17th in the country in math. The national report measures the proficiency scores of every state, based on their standards, the rigor of testing and the determined proficiencies.

In addition, findings on the National Special Education Report Card show that Pennsylvania is one of just nine states to fully implement federal requirements for educating students with disabilities. Our hard work to address factors such as graduation and dropout rates and assessment performance demonstrates a sincere dedication to all students, regardless of the way in which they learn.

I am very pleased to see how well Pennsylvania is doing, because these rankings reflect the high standards to which we hold our students, ensuring they have the necessary education and skills to prepare them for a bright future.

Did you know…

Terre Hill Borough celebrates its 100th birthday in 2007?

The Centennial's Celebration's theme, "Honor the Past. Celebrate the Present. Imagine the Future.", recognizes the way this community in eastern Lancaster County has grown over the past 100 years and how its past will continue to shape the future. Originally called Fairville, Terre Hill has changed and grown over the years. In fact, it was once considered the cigar-making center of the County, and has even been recognized as one of the nation's 110 safe places for the 1980s.

It was my pleasure to join the residents of Terre Hill in their Celebration, which coincided with the annual Terre Hill Days event. As part of the Celebration, the Borough also rebuilt the former Civil Air Patrol spotter's station and dedicated it on July 21.

I want to congratulate the Terre Hill community for its enduring spirit, and I wish the Borough all the best for the next 100 years to come.
