A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Drought watch lifted

The state Department of Environmental Protection recently lifted the drought watch on 34 counties including Lancaster and Chester, which were added to the watch in October.

After below-average precipitation last fall led to the drought watch declaration, above-normal precipitation over the last month has helped conditions in most areas return to normal. There are lingering concerns about groundwater levels in some areas, and a drought watch remains in effect for 20 counties where conditions are improving but have not fully recovered.

Even though the drought watch has been lifted for our region, taking steps to conserve one of our most precious natural resources is always encouraged, and there are very simple things you can do to prevent wasting water. If you are interested in more ideas about how you can conserve water, you can go online to www.depweb.state.pa.us, keyword: drought.

Workplace posters available online

The Department of Labor and Industry is reminding businesses of their responsibility to properly inform workers of the labor laws that protect their rights on the job.

Educating businesses and employees about laws affecting the workplace is one of the many ways in which we can maintain fair and safe workplaces for all Pennsylvanians. Child labor, minimum wage, unemployment compensation and workers’ compensation laws are among the required labor law postings; failure to post these notices can result in penalties and possible fines.

Employers can get state and federally mandated workplace posters free of charge from the Commonwealth online at www.state.pa.us, PA Keyword: workplace posters. Posters can also be obtained at no charge by calling the workplace poster hotline at 717-783-8794. If you need additional assistance obtaining these posters, you can contact the Lititz District office at 301 E. Main Street, Lititz, 717-627-0036.

Nominations for PA Best 50 Women being accepted

The Center for Entrepreneurial Assistance in the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) is now accepting nominations for Pennsylvania's Best 50 Women in Business 2008.

This annual award honors the Commonwealth's dynamic women business leaders who have been making strides in their fields and are helping to shape the state's economic future. Strong candidates will share a commitment to business growth, professional excellence and the community.

To be considered for an award, the nominee must be a female resident or employee in Pennsylvania, and should be an owner, partner, president, CEO, senior executive, management level or have significant authority for decision making in a for-profit business or company. Women may be self-nominated or nominated by another person, and nomination packets must include a cover page and a biographical profile highlighting professional accomplishments, community involvement and advocacy on behalf of women.

All entries must be received by Thursday, February 7 at 5 p.m., no exceptions; more information about the award and detailed criteria for the nomination procedure are available by calling DCED at 1-800-280-3801 or by going online at www.newPA.com.
