A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Senate committee addresses political robo-calls

The Senate State Government Committee, of which I am a member, recently approved legislation which would allow Pennsylvanians to avoid political robo-calls if they wish.

Automated telephone calls, also known as robo-calls, are used to promote a variety of products, services, organizations and political candidates. During election season, though, most people see a dramatic increase in the number of automated calls they received from those running for office – I know of several people who have received ten or more such calls in a weekend and even dozens in just a week or two.

Senate Bill 820 would give Pennsylvanians the ability to opt-out of political robo-calls in the same way that they can opt-out of telemarketing calls, by signing up for the state's Do Not Call list. Because of the frustration these calls cause, this is a very important issue to me, which is why I both cosponsored the bill and also voted to move the bill from the State Government Committee.

I am optimistic that we will continue to move forward on this issue, as the full Senate considers the legislation. Following the approval of the Senate, Senate Bill 820 will also need to be approved by the state House of Representatives before it can be signed into law.

ECO Camp to be offered this summer

Exploring Careers Outdoors is a week-long summer residential camp for high-school age Pennsylvanians sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

ECO Camp is offered free of charge to students entering 10th through 12th grade by September 2008 or who have just completed 12th grade. The two choices for this year's camp are June 15-21 at Kings Gap Environmental Education and Training Center near Carlisle, and July 13-19 at Kirby House near Wilkes-Barre.

Participants are exposed to hands-on activities in state parks and forests as well as career opportunities in conservation, recreation and natural resources. In addition, they may have the chance to continue their involvement with agency staff and programs after the camp through potential options such as internships, mentoring programs, job shadowing or returning as future camp leaders.

More information and applications are available by contacting the ECO Camp Coordinator via mail at the Bureau of State Parks, Environmental Education & Information Division, P.O. Box 8551, Harrisburg, 17105; via phone at 717-783-4356; or via email at ECO_Camp@state.pa.us. Completed applications, including an essay of interest and letter of recommendation, must be submitted by April 1.

Did you know…

…that children can tour the world just by visiting the Lititz Public Library this spring?

Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, the Kids and Cultures organization has been presenting Mini-trips at the library to give young people the chance to experience hands-on games, crafts, music, stories, snacks and other activities of 18 different countries. Although the tour is halfway over for this year, children can take advantage of the remaining trips on February 18, March 17 and April 14.

Each program runs from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the library's Community Room. Pre-registration is required no more than two weeks in advance by emailing your name, phone number and number attending to srihn@lititzlibrary.org or by calling 717-626-2255.

I hope all children will be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures and the world in which they live.
